Access and Use of Student Email at Oakton

Summary

Email access for credit and non-credit students

Body

Student Email

How you can access and use email depends on if you are currently taking classes (enrolled) or new to the college/not taking classes.

Currently Enrolled Oakton Credit and Non-Credit Students

Account Information

Currently enrolled Oakton credit and non-credit students have an unrestricted Oakton provided Gmail account with an @oakton.edu email address.

Credit Students Only*: Official communications to currently enrolled credit students will be sent to the Oakton provided Gmail account, including bills. This email will automatically be set as preferred and this can not be changed. Additional information is available in our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
*Students who are enrolled in both credit and non-credit classes will be required to use Oakton email; this does not include Dual Credit students.

Students can access Oakton Gmail by logging on to my.oakton.edu and using the email card, or directly to mail.google.com/a/oakton.edu.

Forwarding

Enrolled students can configure email forwarding to send mail to another account.

Important things to know if you forward your email:

  • Messages might get lost: Other email services (like Gmail or Yahoo) might block college emails or send them to spam.
  • College-related emails - such as to a professor or advisor - must use your Oakton email: If you send (or reply to) an email from a non-Oakton account, you will be asked to use your Oakton email account to ensure the college is communicating with you and not someone posing as you.
  • You need to check your Oakton account regularly: To ensure you receive all communications from the college and its employees, you'll need to login and use your Oakton email account.

Personal Email

In addition to the Oakton provided Gmail account, students can enter a personal account to be used for password recovery or reset. This can be updated at the Banner Person Information page.

Newly Admitted Students and Other Students Not Enrolled in the Current Term

Restricted Account Information

Newly admitted credit and non-credit students and other other students not taking classes in the current term have a restricted Oakton provided Gmail account with an @oakton.edu email address that can be used for communications to college employees, but will not allow sending or receiving from non-Oakton email addresses. By default official communications will be sent to the personal email address provided on the application. If you prefer to use the @oakton.edu account for all official communications, you can do so.

Preferred Email

For Non-enrolled students, your preferred personal email is where official Oakton emails will be sent. This will default to the personal email you provided on the application, but you can update your personal address at the Banner Person Information page This personal email will be used for password recovery or reset. When you add or update a personal email, it will be automatically set as preferred by the system in a few minutes. By default, any email sent to your @oakton.edu email address will be forwarded to your personal email. If you wish to set your @oakton.edu email address as preferred, just delete your personal email from the system to inactivate it.

Accessing Gmail on a personal device

Based on the college's security settings, you will need to access Gmail using the Gmail app on a phone, or using a  web browser, such as Chrome. You will not be able to add the account to a mail application on your phone, laptop, or other device.
You can download the Gmail app through the Play Store (Android) or App Store (Apple/iPhone).
